1861 Civil War Knapsack with History, This knapsack, shoulder bag and contents belonged to Albert Sheaf C1861, A) Knapsack with wood sides, 14" x 13" with some losses and rips, stenciled contents list under lid, B) Contents of sack, canteen with leather carry strap 10" x 7 1/2" wide, knife and spoon, sack of coffee, misc. broken straps. C) Shoulder bag, 13" x 13" with strap, holes and wear to bag. Provenance: Consigned directly from the family, this box form with wooden sides belonged to Albert A Sheaf of Boston, who joined Mass. volunteers in 1861, we have the original "Mustered into Service" document on that day. Also comes with a typed eulogy letter from his pastor, his photograph when he lived in Portsmouth after the war, two newspaper articles with his history, ancestry.com print out of history before and after the civil war.
