Italo-Byzantine Crucifixion Painting, Oil and gilt on early hardwood panel, 20 7/8" tall x 10 3/8" wide x 1/2" deep, pit saw marks on the reverse indicate a probably E18thC or earlier time period, set in a 19thC paint decorated architectural frame 31 1/2" tall x 22 1/2" wide at crest. Provenance: Old "Plaza Art galleries, NY" label on reverse plus remains of another earlier label, above Christ's head is a horizontal plank which has in Hebrew, Greek and Latin "Jesus of Nazareth, King of Jews" or "INRI", small areas of paint restoration, wear on edges and losses consistent with an early period of creation.
