Andrea Sacchi, Italian (1599-1661) Attributed, Oil on canvas painting of Pope Pius V (1504-1572) born "Antonio Ghislieri", standing looking upwards holding a white lily while at his feet is papal tiara crown, dressed in a gold decorated white robe with religious images, above his head aret wo winged cherub faces, unsigned, 104" tall by 46 1/2" wide including the frame, the frame appears to be an addition in the 18th/19thC probably done when the canvas was lined, now with some paint losses. Provenance: A NH collector, estate of Harold Osgood Whitney who had a home in Watertown Mass, "The Elms" and palace in Rome, a Fogg Art Museum loan label on reverse #2776, it was there January 5th-30th 1933 and at that time the painting was attributed to Andrea Sacchi.
