Millard Fillmore, presidential letter to Daniel Webster, Secretary of State. September 11, 1851. Single page, manuscript letter signed, submitting an application and inquiring about the consul appointment of Julius Kretschmar to the consul of Palermo. A diplomatic letter but showing the collegial tone expected between these two statesmen, as can be seen in the personal letters between them from around this time, including a follow up to this example from the following month in which Kretschmar's appointment is discussed in further detail.
