"I MADE MY ESCAPED THROUGH A SHOWER OF BULLETS THAT FLEW AROUND ME LIKE HAIL".
Extensive archive of Private William J. Howe, a provost guard in the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Consisting of over 70+ letters from Howe to his young bride Jeanette throughout the course of the war, plus related ephemera and genealogical documents.
Howe, a native of Troy PA volunteered and enlisted in August 1862, and trained as a provost guard. Most of his time during the war was spent on the Western front, including long stays at Murfreesboro and outside St. Louis. He writes about scouting trips, taking confederate prisoners, and freeing slaves. As the war proceeds, his letters become increasingly political and disaffected.
Along with the letters, many with their stamped covers, are cabinet cards, pension roles, and a host of related ephemera.
