Foxcroft, Thomas (1697-1769) 'A funeral sermon occasion'd by several mournful deaths, and preach'd on the decease of Mr. John Coney, late of Boston, goldsmith : who died, August 20, 1722 in the 67th year of his age / by T.F. pastor of a church in Boston.' Boston: B. Green, 1722. 67 p. In tact gatherings, complete. Water stain to tops of most pages (See photos). Likely removed from a bound volume containing 4 sermons including Cotton Mather's "The soul upon the wing". Foxcroft was born in Cambridge in 1697, a grandson of Thomas Danforth, the Puritan colonial governor, and graduated from Harvard College in 1714. From 1717-1769 he served as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Boston. John Coney was an early American goldsmith and silversmith in Boston. According to Chaim Rosenberg (Goods for Sale: Products and Advertizing in the Massachusetts Industrial Age, 2007) Coney was considered the most important silversmith of his day. A rare and fascinating document.
