An unusual transverse slit drum, probably decorative; Central Africa. The drum with long tapering end, the front with carved head in the form of a naturalistic bovine. The body of the drum shows age and wear commensurate with use however the head appears to have been recarved from the original front of the drum that may once have tapered as the back, which would explain the unusual shape. It is possible that this was an undecorated drum that has been re carved to look like a decorated transverse drum from Northern DR Congo or Central African Republic.
