Lot 170: An exceptional and Large Tamalameque figural urn, Colombia C. 900 - 1500 AD H: 25"

A fine and rare Tamalameque figural urn from the Rio Magdalena area, Ocaña region; the lid in the form of a large and complete seated figure with flattened 'squared' head and body, arms and legs, seated on a stool. The face with characteristic brow lines. Remains of white pigment throughout. The Lower portion elongate and rounded at the bottom with lugs at the sides, front and back. Assembled from approximately 20 or so original pieces that were repaired to Museum/Archeological specifications, meaning that no attempt was made to fill in areas that are cracked and no restoration has been done over the original surface 're-glues', other than a band of in-fill atop the head, but not colored or restored. A fantastic and rare example; the vast majority of similar examples in the 'square' style, usually presenting only heads, not full figures. The large size of the figure in the flattened style, may indicate an earlier date of manufacture within the Tamalameque cultural horizon.
