A fine and old Ambo or Ovimbundu drum. Ambo or Ovimbundu, Angola and Zambia. H: 25". The drum of classical form, tapering from top to bottom with exceptional patina, carved with 6 faces in very high relief, with angular cheeks and narrow slit-eyes. The surface a deep reddish color. The tympanum basically intact. An old label affixed to the surface reads ‘Ovambo// sysbtg //L auf’. Possibly late 19th C. Ex. Private Ca. Collection.
