A fine Kuba kneeling divination figure. Kuba people, DR Congo. H: 15". The kneeling figure beautifully carved with large head and simple coif high brow, fleshy face and long neck with incising; the body heavily scarified representing the patterns of scarification used in Northern Kuba areas among the Ngongo or Bakele which are related to the Dengese across the Sankuru river. Figures such as these were thought to have been used as initiatory objects but research has shown that these were utilized by the Kuba as the abodes for diviner’s tutelary spirits. An exceptional carving. On a custom base. Exhibited, “Art of the Kubaâ€. Governors State University, IL; December 2008. Ex. Gelbard Collection, NY.
