A fine Austral Islands paddle. Austral Islands, French Polynesia. L:37". The paddle of classical form, carved extensively all over, the knop with typical Austral Island heads around the perimeter (one face deficient) the handle, square in profile well patinated and beautifully carved, meeting the blade with a central pattern bisecting the blade design of rounded forms with complex design. Some restoration to the area where the handle meets the blade, else very good. A fine old example. From a New England private collection, by descent.
