Lot 180: A very rare and fine Fijian Chief's necklace

A very rare and fine Fijian Chief's necklace. Necklaces of this type, called Vuasagale are made from whales's teeth and were the prerogative of important Fijian chiefs. This particular type of necklace, a variant known as Sisi, is made from pilot whale teeth and probably pre-dates the necklaces of carved tooth. Made from seven teeth bound together with sennit, this necklace is a rare example of Fijian chiefly decoration. One of the teeth has split but is intact and attached, and another has a small chip. The three central teeth have pierced tips that likely held attachments. Fine old variegated patina. From a Maine private collection by descent through the family.

Price Realized: $3,500
