A fine and large middle Sepik gable mask, New Guinea. Iatmul; Middle Sepik. H: 39". The large and powerful gable mask of classical form, woven of rigid fiber and covered with clay and painted; the high forehead bulging and deep ocular orbits with half calabashes attached as the eyes, the nose long and septum pierced. The face surrounded by a half circular ledge trimmed in cassowary feathers. The whole painted in red, white and black. Exceptionally good condition and a fine and rare authentic example. Ex.
