Lot 175: A fine Upper war Sepik shield

A fine Upper war Sepik shield, Papua New Guinea. April River or Bahinemo; Papua New Guinea. H:73". The shield of elongated form with serrated design around the perimeter, a head carved in high relief to the top and then lozenges with circles and arcs, the whole in shades of red, orange and yellow pigments against black and white with some loss and staining. The reverse with upper part of original grip intact, lower portion missing. A fine example on a custom base. Field collected by Rudi Caesar, Ex private New England Collection
