A middle Sepik Orator’s stool, Papua New Guinea. Iatmul people, Middle Sepik: H: 56". The stool of classical form, with a huge mask-like face painted white with black curvilinear designs, shell eyes and shell attachments about the face, with boar’s tusk nose ornament and cassowary headband. The body small and almost vestigial beneath the large head; and wearing a skirt. The stool itself with four struts. Old surface and patination to the base. Collected by John C.
