Lot 61: Dutch Figure Netsuke

Antique Japanese Dutch Figure Netsuke. Under the policy called Sakoku, in force in Japan from 1630 to 1853, foreigners were excluded from the country, the only exception were the Dutch, who had a trading post near Nagasaki. They were regarded as curiosities due to their clothing and their habit of keeping animals. This figure with animal draped around his neck and holding a palm leaf.
