Lot 470: A Saxon Miner's Guild Parade Ax

The Axe of Classical Form with large iron blade with cruciform cut-out and high pointed rising tip; the whole with some oxidation. The shaft with inset bone plaques (one deficient) with floral and religious motifs, the shaft with a crucifix and base with complex design elements. Old label on the bottom showing the axe was purchased long ago at 'Fenton and Sons, New Oxford St' - an old English arms dealer. A fine rare example, 29" long. Probably late 18th/Early 19th century.
