A Fine Wooden Dance Mask of Mahakala, Bhutan or Nepal, Early 20th Century, the mask represents Mahkala in his Blue manifestation known in Tibet as 'mgon po phyag drug pa'; the mask with crown of skulls, high brow with large third eye, aggressive face with barred teeth and wrinkled nose. The eye brows, and details of the cheeks and chin carved with typical 'fire' motifs and pigmented in layers of red. The interior surface showing age and handling with recarving to the interior, likely when transferred to a new dancer, remains of Nepalese Antiquities Department seal in the interior.
