A Fine Asmat Shield, Northeastern Asmat; Tchitak region (Area C); Irian Jaya, The shield of monumental form, the surface with three stacked sets of radiating four-part circular motifs in black, white and pinkish-red; the top with stylized face and an area of old damage to the proper left side. The Handle large and well balanced. Most certainly made for traditional use, old crusty surface, 21" x 78 1/2". Provenance: New York Private Collector, and previous Ex. Private Dutch collection.
