Lot 1: Lucas Cranach The Elder, or Lucas Cranach and Studio, German (1472-1553)

Lucas Cranach The Elder, or Lucas Cranach and Studio, German (1472-1553), Important oil on wooden panel depicting Friedrich Margrave of Brandenburg- Ansbach (1460-1536) dressed in his gold suit of armor, signed lower mid right with a red dragon monogram and dated 1525, 23 ⅞” x 18 ⅛”, and comes with a C1960 painted black frame (Maloof label on reverse), tested gold leaf on his armor. Provenance: New Hampshire collection; Maloof collection owned by Hammer Galleries, NY, NY prior to 1960s. This is so, from our conversation from the current gallery manager at Hammer Galleries. Along with another marking in red on the gallery label “A M(?) Gall. 11/11/74”. Condition: Many coats of old varnish, cracks, small repairs and addition of the blue green feathers (in the earlier 18thC. as observed by pigment analysis), located just under his helmet, smalt background. Research: During a consultation (2021) with the Chief Conservator at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, MA, it was pointed out that there are slightly “visible under drawings” around the mouth, a technique Cranach used before he painted. It was at this expert’s direction to further consult with Williamstown Art Conservation Center, Inc., Williamstown, MA., pigment and XRF analysis completed 2/01/2022. Additionally, a wood analysis by Direct AMS Bothel, WA., carbon tested, median date 1564, completed (January 2021).
