Fine Quality British Cavalry Officer's Mameluke Sword C1840, Blade is etched with maker’s name at the ricasso: Buckmaster, 3 New Burlington St., London. White bone handle with brass decorated cross guard. Finely etched blade with elaborate floral scrollwork, crossed flags, and V.R. (Victoria Regina) surmounted by a crown. Some staining on the curved blade but no oxidation. Elaborate scabbard with decorated hanging fittings and drag. Originally probably covered with velvet cloth. Now wrapped with black tape. Blade length: 30". Length overall: 36". A very nice example of sword making at the high point of the Empire.
