New Hampshire Civil War Officers Sword, Belt and Ephemera, Very historic lot that belonged to Civil War 1st Lieutenant Heber J. Davis of Hancock, NH, Davis enlisted in Company K of the New Hampshire 7th Regiment. He served in a number theatres including Florida, South Carolina and Virginia, saw action in a number of the more famous battles and was wounded three times. He was discharged on March 27th, 1865, due to his wounds. Thereafter he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad for 40 years having moved to San Francisco. Returning to Hancock, he lived out his days and died on July 29, 1918. He is remembered for funding the war memorial which stands on the town green as well as other civic projects. This lot contains multiple items related to Davis’s Civil War Career. A) His Ames Mfg. Co. Model 1850 staff & field officer’s sword which is in excellent condition. The etched and polished blade is in like new condition with scrollwork, an American Eagle, “US” and two panoplies of arms. The brass guard shows no dings or breaks. The sharkskin grip shows some slight fading and the twisted wire wrap is all intact. The left side of the grip shows a longitudinal crack that in no way detracts from the beauty of the piece. Blued metal scabbard showing cleanable light oxidation with brass fittings. Blade length: 30 1/2". Length over all: 36". B) Rare dress sword belt and large silver or silver plated buckle for previous item. Due to the disintegration of leather, these belts are rarely found. Buckle is embossed with an American Eagle and worn with a dress uniform. C) The framed promotion to 1st Lieutenant of Davis along with a period photograph of him. Size: 17" X 13 1/2" sight. D) A folder of military documents (muster rolls, discharge papers, etc.), a biography and two photographs of Davis, one in military uniform.
