Lot 213A: A fine Chokwe Chikunza mask

A fine Chokwe Chikunza mask. Chokwe people, DR Congo and Angola. H: 8". The mask well carved with rounded forhead, large ocular orbits with small raised coffee-bean eyes inside, large wedge-shaped nose and wide mouth and small beard. The Chikunza mask unlike the male Chihongo or female Pwo, dances is associated with fecundity and dances in contexts that are often not associated with Mukanda initiation, though it has a role in Mukanda as well. Wooden masks of this character are hard to come by as the majority are created in bark fiber. On a custom base. Ex. Irwin cernic collection, NY.
