Lot 216: A large Mbunda Sachihongo mask

A large Mbunda Sachihongo mask. Mbunda people, Zambia. H: 21". The large round mask of classical form with rounded forehead, long narrow slit eyes, large nose with flaring nostrils and huge bloated cheeks around a small open mouth. The whole with reddish pigment all over the surface. The face eaten in may places by insects, and reddened for use after. A fine old example and quite powerful. On a custom base. Ex. Private NY collection, purchased in Germany.
